STORY: "Calm in the Storm" - Jack/Stephen, Master & Commander

Yet another of the commentfics from More Joy Day 2017, this one written for [personal profile] msmoat's prompt "quiet".

STORY: "The Epic Tale of Jeon the Giant" - Varric/Hawke, Dragon Age

Another of the commentfics from More Joy Day 2017, this one for [personal profile] mollyamory. ♥ Backstory: there's a videogame series called "Dragon Age". And in Dragon Age II, you play a human character named Hawke (you can choose a male or female iteration). Hawke ends up super-besties with the dwarf character Varric Tethras, who is a storyteller by avocation, and in his spare time writes books--hard-boiled detective stories, romance-adventure, etc.

In the next game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Varric and Hawke are separated. But in some circumstances, male!Hawke shows up again for a particular portion of the game, and it's still obvious that Varric loves him soooOOooo muuuuch.

And yet, neither of the games allows Hawke to romance Varric, the way Hawke was able to choose from so many other characters! Unfair, unjust. And given Varric's devotion and heart-eyes-admiration for Hawke, plus Varric's subtle ongoing sense of loneliness, mollyamory thought that should be remedied.

MOVED AND SECONDED:

Summary:

Why couldn't the stupid character stay where he was put? No, all that work to get him face-to-face with the bad guy and into a final battle, and afterward there he went, waltzing away into the wilds to...~~do good~~ or ~~fight the good fight~~ or ~~be brave~~.

Screw Jeon, anyway. That big dumb brawny nug-licking Fereldan. That hero.

Night on Fic Mountain reveal: "The Fever of the World" (Master & Commander)

The authors & artists for Night On Fic Mountain have been revealed! And here is mine, a shocking revelation I am sure:

The Fever of the World (8487 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), Master and Commander - All Media Types
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin
Characters: Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Prison, Delirium, Worry, suspiciously intense gen
Summary:

And everywhere the fire, lighting sky and sea, dappling across the small bobbing faces lifted to the heavens.

He had seen Stephen swimming, hadn't he. He had known Stephen would remember how to float, the way Jack had taught him. Feeling sure, he had floundered past, to get about saving as many as he could. After all, he had seen Stephen swimming.

Hadn't he?

I was assigned [personal profile] lynndyre and waved my hands gleefully in the air; we share a lot of common interests in the Master & Commander universe for sure. \o\ /o/ \o\

She asked for Jack & Stephen and mentioned "suspiciously intense gen" among her likes, so that's the note I tried to hit. It's about worry and need and fever dreams and tender hands-on medical care and Stephen having a plan. And I borrowed Captain Christy-Pallière from the books, because I love him so and why not. :D

I also killed an offscreen OC or two who I actually feel kind of bad about. Nothing to them really, but I'm still like, aw.

And now that I don't have to wriggle about trying not to reveal my own story, let me say that I recommend everything in NofM 2017's Master & Commander tag. There's the examination of canon events through the lens of a full-on soul bond, there's high adventure with giant enslaved sea serpents, there's an underplayed moment in time in which Stephen willingly sacrifices great things for Jack, and to top it all off there's this!:

I meant to post this this morning, but then there were dishes to do, and then I worked on (well, brainstormed, anyway) my fledgling idea for Night on Fic Mountain, and then I went out for an Ingress walk in the gross swampy heat, and look it's almost 7pm. /o\

STORY: "The Fusion Affair" - The Man from UNCLE (TV)

Yet another story I kept forgetting to put into AO3! I originally wrote this for a zine, "Relative Secrecy 2", 1998:

The Fusion Affair (7729 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (TV)

Nineteen ninety eight! Zoicks. Time kind of flew. I did eventually put it up on my own webspace, but never imported it into AO3 when that came along...I think I started once, but then for some reason didn't get it tagged and posted before the expiration of the draft, and then was grumpy about having to hand-code the italics again? Oh, I don't know, it was silly, because of course I sat down to do it today and it didn't take so long.

There used to be a really nice website for Marian Kelly's MUNCLE and Wild Wild West zine series, but it seems to have gone now, alas.

You can see my obsessions with things like discovering-deeper-partnership and the broccoli test from back in the day, huh. :D

STORY: "Salt Water Unbounded" - Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin

While Yuletide was in full swing, I also signed up to contribute to the holiday season Advent Calendar in the [community profile] perfect_duet Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin community. I was nervous about it, but I figured I'd be done with my Yuletide story by then and my writing engines would hopefully still be revving.

And luckily, that's how it turned out! So right after finishing my Yuletide Jack/Stephen, I was able to turn to another Jack/Stephen, this time more specifically drawn from the books:

Salt Water Unbounded (2770 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Aubrey-Maturin Series - Patrick O'Brian
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin
Characters: Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin
Additional Tags: Age of Sail, Hurt/Comfort, Swimming, Trust, Aftermath of Torture
Summary:

In the aftermath of the torture at Mahon, with Stephen injured and Jack kept at a distance, how can they both recover?

It's set during the third novel, HMS Surprise, between chapters 4 and 5. After my first full read-through of the books, I was visiting friends, and kept talking to them about how amazing that part of the book was. Stephen is rescued from terrible torture in chapter 4, and then there's a time gap, and in chapter 5 we see that he is much better and now goes swimming with Jack. We get some mentions in hindsight of what the recovery period was like, but we don't get to see it happening.

And I was fascinated, because we are both shown and directly told that Stephen hates to be helped, and yet it was during this very vulnerable time while he was so badly injured that he was willing to let Jack teach him to swim. It felt like an amazing gift of trust on his part--trusting Jack with his wounded body and his pride both, and finally letting Jack help him, which we know Jack longs so much to do. It seems like a potentially healing time for the both of them, after such trauma.

(I highly recommend the book HMS Surprise, one of the prime Hurt-Stephen books in the series. It has the torture and rescue, it has Stephen being shot in a duel and operating on himself as in the movie, it has him in emotional anguish...kind of a Stephen-shaped piñata. :D )

More Joy Day!

Already I am finding joy from my reading list, so thank you all very much, and I will try to chime in!

First off, I encourage participation in the thread on sdwolfpup's journal, asking for "some pure, unadulterated ship squee" (friendship included!). Go forth and comment and squee!

Second off, I'd like to copy movies-michelle's offer to write little comment fics. So:

Give a fandom and a one word prompt, and I will write a little comment fic for you. Suggested fandoms include (in alphabetical order): Almost Human, Master & Commander (movie or books), Ocean's 11, Peacemakers, Person of Interest, Rejseholdet, Sinbad, Star Trek (TOS), The Sting. But if you have some other request, run it by me, you never know. :D

This is basically a new story? Kind of? Or at least, I'm not sure if anybody but [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant ever saw it--I wrote it as a flashfic challenge when tagged by [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant on tumblr, but never posted it here. It's super short, a little over 200 words, but I did want to put it onto AO3 to keep all my stuff in one place. Yuletide reveal: Master & Commander, "The Fragile Skiff Attains the Shore"

Happy New Year! Now everybody peels their masks off and goes boo. :D

For this year's Yuletide, I wrote:

The Fragile Skiff Attains the Shore (13362 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin
Characters: Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin, William Mowett, Preserved Killick
Additional Tags: Age of Sail, Action/Adventure, Hurt/Comfort, Worry, Whipping, Cuddling & Snuggling, Angst, Boats and Ships
Summary:

Stephen's letter, folded inside his jacket, pressed against his heart like a hot poker.
To Captain Jno. Aubrey, R.N., HMS Surprise:
I ask you to sail on as scheduled. Do not come looking for me.

This was the first time I offered Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin--I only offered the movie this year, to get my feet wet more manageably and keep my canon review under control, although I have now read all the books at least twice. (hugs books) My recipient said she likes hurt/comfort, and I like hurt/comfort, so I gladly gave Jack a bit of a physical going-over along with some worry & angst for both parties (poor Jack. But he's so physically robust! I'm sure the worrying and angsting hurt him worse.). And a happy ending, of course, because I am not currently my own evil clone or wearing a sash in the Mirror Universe.

I flapped about over some tangles in the throughline, but in the end I really enjoyed writing it. I intend to write some more Jack/Stephen--in fact I have written something else , which I'll be posting a little later in the new year.

As for my cornucopia of gifts, get this! The big Sinbad story, AND the Sting pretend-couple story, were BY THE SAME PERSON, [personal profile] damkianna!! CAN you even believe it. I am amazed all over again--it's like she spelunked into my brain, and look at all the words she wrote while she was in there! *confetti*

The Rejseholdet story is by [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant, and this is the only one I actually (tentatively) guessed. Chatting with [personal profile] sakana17 in email I was like, hmmm, I wonder if that was halotolerant--she's such a fantastic writer and also I know she loves Fischer/La Cour... WELL LOOKY HERE. :D :D :D

And the Shetland story is by an author new to me, [archiveofourown.org profile] idareu2bme. I love all the new discoveries Yuletide helps me make!

STORY: "To Track the Beast" - Peacemakers - Finch/Stone

Here's the last of that batch of finished little stories I had in my pocket:

To Track the Beast (3333 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Peacemakers (2003)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Larimer Finch/Jared Stone
Characters: Larimer Finch, Jared Stone, Katie Owen
Additional Tags: Western, Angst, Law Enforcement, Post-Canon, First Time
Summary:

Finch hesitated by the back door into the parlor, where the door curtains had been drawn against the night. He'd become accustomed to just walking in of an evening, and it felt strange to stop himself. But he couldn't quite imagine Stone being as happy to see him as he had been lately, looking up over his glasses with that smile that some might almost call shy.

Man I love Peacemakers. So promising, so short-lived, alas. I feel like it was tragically ahead of its time, before the days when lots of cable channels are producing original drama series and thriving. I think it would fit in perfectly right now, a western about the transitional period into modern criminal science. It had a lot of interesting things to say, and great characters to say it with. If you're ever curious to see it, last I heard it was actually on Hulu, although I can't check at the moment.

This story was inspired by my H/C Bingo card, although it itself did not really turn out to be H/C. I should dig that card out and give it another look; it had all kinds of inspirational topics on it.

Night on Fic Mountain Reveal: "The Steel-Wire Tightrope" (The Sting)

Authors and artists have been revealed for this year's Night On Fic Mountain exchange (welll, they were revealed a little while back, but then the weekend got away from me and hmm mutter mumble). Here was my contribution:

The Steel-Wire Tightrope (6609 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Sting (1973)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Henry Gondorff/Johnny Hooker
Characters: Henry Gondorff, Johnny Hooker
Additional Tags: Con Artists, 1930s, Rescue, Angst, Misunderstandings, Nonverbal Communication, Drugged Sex, Broccoli Test
Summary:

Henry's in trouble. But when Johnny finds him, that's when their trouble really starts.

Awww yisssss, I got to write The Sting again! \o/ \o/ \o/ I rewatched the movie once during the writing process, and then I rewatched it last week with some friends, just because. I've seen it so many times, and show no signs of burning out or getting tired of it. I love the characters, and the milieu, and how amenable it all is to fannish extrapolation. Robert Redford glows like a sun god and runs like a deer, Paul Newman's eyes gleam a piercing clear sapphire, they both have arms and shoulders to make me weep in the best way, and Johnny and Henry come to care about each other SO MUCH you guys. So much. Not to mention that Henry is an Olympic-class secret worrier. ♥_____♥

Course, in this story, Johnny gets to do most of the worrying for a change. Just for a nice switcheroo. But this is my second story in which I was reminded that AO3 does not have a plain old "Drugged" tag! I mean, wat? "Drugged Sex", sure. But not just "Drugged". Which seems SO WEIRD, given the venerable age of the trope, you know--'oh no my partner got knocked out and doped and now I must rescue him', which was canon all the time at least back in the day, and which lends itself so well to tender h/c, and then perhaps sex that is not itself Drugged Sex, because everyone is now sobered up. So I used the Drugged Sex tag, even though that is not precisely how it goes (it sort of is at first, and then it isn't, and I think the story explains itself best).

Is there a way to propose they set up a canonical Drugged tag? I am ashamed to admit that my knowledge of the inner (or, in fact, outer) workings of the AO3 tag system is not the best.

Anyway, I'm excited to have had a chance to write these guys again! I fell into a weird throughline blockage during the writing process, but mary crawford and klia got me out of there and fixed it up, and I am really happy about it.

Yuletide reveal: 2 stories, Invisible Man (TV 2000) and Rejseholdet|Unit One

Happy New Year, everybody! And happy Yuletide reveals day, which I always enjoy.

Restless By Day (2194 words) by Dorinda

Relationships: Allan Fischer/Thomas La Cour
Characters: Allan Fischer, Thomas La Cour
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Wrestling, Kissing
Summary:

It's late at night after a solved murder, and Fischer desperately needs a smoke. La Cour, though...he seems to need something else.

As in Yuletide 2012, this year I got to write for my extremely-beloved-but-cancelled show from back in 2000, Sci Fi's "The Invisible Man", with long lanky Darien Fawkes, the science experiment gone wrong; and short intense Bobby Hobbes, his antagonistic teammate turned deeply loving partner. And oh, I just love the characters and their milieu so much aaaaaaa. This story actually came from the germ of an idea I had for my 2012 assignment but didn't get very far into at the time. It unfolded very differently this year than it would have before, so I'm glad I waited!

And I was dying to write a little Rejseholdet, to dip my toe in, hopefully in advance of writing something longer at a later date. (Me? Writing long? PERISH THE THOUGHT, she said, eyeing her 20K Yuletide assignment. *g*) I so wanted to give a little present to [personal profile] sakana17, who got me hooked on Rejseholdet to begin with.

Speaking of whom, it turns out she is the one who wrote my fantastic Rejseholdet Yuletide gift this year! She had me going for quite a while there, during our innocuous 'oh so what're you writing oh that sounds nice' chit-chat. Heh.

Anyway, I thought that the episode with the bondage cage, which both La Cour and Fischer end up folding themselves into at different times, really cried out for a little epilogue. With kissin' in. \o/

Night on Fic Mountain reveal: "Beyond Moons and Sun and Star" (Cutter/Skywise)

The authors for this year's Night on Fic Mountain have been revealed, and the story I wrote was perhaps one of my most obvious contributions to an anonymous fest yet!:

Beyond Moons and Sun and Star (13788 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Elfquest
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cutter/Skywise, Foxfur/Skywise, Cutter/Leetah/Skywise
Characters: Cutter (Elfquest), Skywise (Elfquest), Foxfur (Elfquest), Rain (Elfquest), Bearclaw (Elfquest), Joyleaf (Elfquest), Pike (Elfquest), Leetah (Elfquest), Redlance (Elfquest), Strongbow (Elfquest), Treestump (Elfquest)
Additional Tags: Soul Bond, Soulmates, Canon Related, Missing Scene, Angst, Rescue, Trauma, Cuddling & Snuggling, Telepathy, Elves
Summary:

Skywise knows Cutter's soul name--he has always known it. But he may not always have wanted to.

I suspect [personal profile] kerithwyn knew it was me maybe fourteen seconds in. Possibly because we'd had such a good time at Escapade, sitting down for a good chewy talk about Elfquest. I'd always wanted to write EQ sometime, but talking with 'rith definitely helped push me over the edge.

And of course Cutter/Skywise in particular has always been an interest of mine. I mean, they're kings of the hurt/comfort and have a canonical soulbond, what's not to like? [personal profile] marycrawford and I entertained each other during the writing process by sending links to various pages from the comics with, like, RESCUES and HUGGING and RESCUES WITH HUGGING, and CARETAKING and WORRYING and SOULTOUCHING, and man you just never run out of material.

I hadn't turned the transformative lens onto Elfquest before, but it felt great--I got to disregard the late-in-the-day/apparently-official version of Cutter and Skywise's bond the comics came up with, which I feel has tons of holes storywise and characterizationwise and culturewise, and substitute another option. Is this what the phrase sorry-not-sorry is for? :D

For those of you who haven't read it, all of Elfquest except for the current series "Final Quest" is readable online for free; my story note has a few relevant links, but it's also easy to start at the beginning and go straight through.

Yuletide reveal: 2 stories, Almost Human and Sinbad (2012)

Happy New Year! And it is Yuletide reveal-time! *\o/*

I wrote two stories this year, one "Almost Human" assignment (a long one, in fact the longest story I've completed so far), and one "Sinbad" (2012) treat that just sort of popped up in my head right toward the deadline:

When a Man's an Empty Kettle (40429 words) by Dorinda

It wasn't like John minded going undercover with Dorian. No problem posing as Dorian's owner. At a private sexbot show. Where he would have to...Oh, shit.

Bare Wood (1644 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sinbad (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Gunnar/Sinbad
Characters: Gunnar (Sinbad), Sinbad (Sinbad)
Additional Tags: Boats and Ships, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Minor Injuries
Summary:

When the rest of the crew is away, that's the time for Gunnar to tend to the ship. He doesn't expect to be tended to himself.

It was funny--I had a strong feeling for the whole week before assignments that I was going to get "Almost Human", so I was tossing around story ideas, and then I thought... OMG UNDERCOVER/PRETEND COUPLE. Because John is so emotionally repressed and lonely, and Dorian is thoughtful and communicative and observant. And I thought, if circumstances forced them to be intimate, John would panic (especially given all his canonical issues and history with 1) robots, 1a) sexbots, 2) synthetic tech, namely his prosthetic leg, and 3) being lied to/having an intimate relationship basically simulated). And to help with the panic, Dorian (very emotionally willing and fluent, and in this story having been privately developing deeper feelings for John) might try to increase the emotional depth of the intimacy, wrongly thinking that it would help John relax if he knew it was real on Dorian's part and not pretending. Uh-oh, problem. *rubs hands at the prospect of my beautiful slashpair suffering. Ahem.*

Faithful to my stated intentions to get started ASAP, I got the basics sketched out and started laying words down pretty soon. Which was a really good thing, as it turns out, given how long it got! *facepalm* But I ended up feeling good about the storyline, and about the OCs, especially the one who ends up being most important. It all sort of unfolded into many of the themes I seem compelled to chew on with robotslash (or more accurately I guess, self-aware-android-slash), like autonomy and consent and whatnot.

My poor betas [personal profile] marycrawford, [personal profile] klia, and [personal profile] mollyamory only had like a week, total, for reading, making suggestions, and giving me time for revisions. They were absolute troupers, and fixed some really big things (especially given my observed tendency toward the end to be like, "and then they worked some stuff out and were happy *handwave* *handwave* I am tired nao". Thanks, you guys! ♥

So I had uploaded my final edits, and was ready to unwind at last. ...But then I came home from work with an idea for a treat story in "Sinbad" (2012), and actually wrote almost all of it in one night, which for me is not usually a thing. I don't know what happened--I think my writerly-engine, having been revving so high for the entire Yuletide period, was still spinning. So I did a little scene between Gunnar (the responsible, protective, melancholy ex-Viking) and Sinbad (the impetuous, demonstrative, striving young hero), and felt happy and warm about the whole thing. [personal profile] marycrawford betaed again at super-short notice, and again fixed it right up!

I was delighted to discover that I have apparently not lost the ability to write things that weigh less than a metric ton. Whew! For a while there I was worried. :D

TroublesFest story revealed: "All That Time We Were Buccaneers" (Duke/Nathan)

TroublesFest authors have been revealed, and this is my story:

All That Time We Were Buccaneers (3857 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Haven
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duke Crocker/Nathan Wuornos
Characters: Duke Crocker, Nathan Wuornos
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Mind Control, Injury, Alcohol, Kissing, Flashbacks, Hand Jobs, Missing Scene, Pirates
Summary: Duke has been mind-controlled into playing pirate, but Nathan is not playing. Duke is not a pirate, and neither is Nathan, dammit. ...Not anymore.

I'd been interested in writing this missing scene for some time (as you can tell, from my previous post about Last Year's Me). In episode 3x10, "Burned", Duke is mind-controlled for a while by a little girl with a Trouble. And eventually he's playing 'pirate' for her, dashing about, fighting off invisible enemies, with the stereotypical pirate yarrr and so forth. Audrey and Nathan arrive while Duke is swordfighting on the perilous top rail of the Gull's balcony, and Nathan races up the stairs to help him, but before Nathan can get there, Duke slips and falls. Nathan rushes to his side (to put his hands all over him, natch), and tries to look after him, while Duke unwisely staggers to his feet and then passes out. Commercial.

Then there's a scene where Duke and Nathan are both not present, while Audrey talks to the Troubled girl. When we finally see Nathan again, he says that Duke is "resting", and "at least he stopped thinking I'm an enemy pirate".

So, you know, nice hurt/comfort missing scene potential. But what pushed it over the edge for me is a little exchange toward the end of the episode. On the page, it's nothing special; they stand by the truck, Nathan asks Duke if he's good, Duke says he is and asks Nathan to keep the town from imploding until he gets back. But the proximity, the touching, the way they look at each other, the husky softness of their voices, it's a surprisingly intimate moment (and in that gif you can't even see low enough in the frame to see how Nathan is touching him). In season 3, they'd been having some rocky times (rockier than usual), so it was interesting to see their guard so willingly down here.

That was the endpoint I had in mind for the missing scene, then, positing some change that might have happened while Nathan was looking after Duke. Also I figured, what if the pirate thing took a little while to finish wearing off? (Yarrrr. :D)

This is also my entry in the "explain the old pirate sticker in Nathan's truck" sweepstakes--Killa noticed the sticker in season 1 episode 3 and put up a nice screencap: http://killabeez.dreamwidth.org/406570.html , and people have drawn (delightful) connections between it and Duke ever since.

old Life On Mars (UK) story imported to AO3: "Some Living After We Die"

No kidding, I had a dream the other night about this Life On Mars (UK) slash story I wrote in 2006. It only ever went up in a little LJ community that [personal profile] cereta created, on the occasion of our friend [livejournal.com profile] itsthewa having some surgery. And I didn't even have an LJ yet, so [personal profile] cereta had to post it for me!

Anyway, when I woke up, I remembered I had never imported that story to AO3, so I went and did that this morning over some oatmeal. (Bless the importing tool, soooo easy.)

Some Living After We Die (3893 words) by Dorinda
