dorinda: Fat Pony appears in a blaze of light! (Fat_Pony)
Duuuudes the Night On Fic Mountain 2017 collection is open, and I got THREE PRESENTS. \o/ Almost Human, AND Rejseholdet, AND a Jack & Stephen treat! Check this out:

...oh wait, huh, weird. I only just now noticed that two of these pieces have no "Share" button at the top. But it shows up on the third one. So the 'share' function can be disabled? I've never seen that option. What's that about, I wonder?

Anyway, no biggie, I shall share the first two the old fashioned way, uphill both ways in the snow:

First, a really lovely romantic piece of John/Dorian art called "Halfway Till Bliss". I adore the differing expressions, and the subtleties of their faces, and Dorian's eyelashes, and John's hair. And KISSIN. <3

Then, a wonderfully grounded and real-feeling Rejseholdet story, "The (Irregular) Right Direction": it's set ten years post-canon, with Fischer permanently settled in EU law-enforcement bureaucracy, but with something unsettled and restless humming deep within him. Hmmmm, I wonder what he's still missing? :D

And finally, a touching and nuanced Master & Commander (and/or O'Brian books) Jack & Stephen story, "Why Darwin Discovered Evolution", which has a Share button, thusly:

1815: Napoleon surrenders, and is exiled to St Helena. The British Navy, after seventeen years of war, retires ships, crews and captains. John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, begins a programme of exploration which will last until 1845 and will include, in 1835, Charles Darwin's five year voyage of discovery in the Beagle.

In England, Jack Aubrey languishes on the Captains’ List, and Stephen Maturin chases moths.

Oh, Stephen. He loves Jack SO MUCH. ♥____♥ (And vice-versa, of course. Sigh!)

Along with my utterly wonderful Yuletide present, a brand-new story for The Sting just dropped right now, from [personal profile] mlyn:

After wrapping up the Lonnegan con, Henry and Johnny hit the road. For Johnny, a journey of one night changes everything.

It starts just post-canon, with Johnny facing a letdown, but then learning a little something that helps him proceed. Or, a couple of somethings. :D It includes a nice little portrait of Kid Twist, my favorite secondary character. ♥____♥

It's out at last! Yay! Keiko Kirin, who wrote the m/m novel "Safety Net" (about guys who meet in college on the football team, and find friendship as well as love and careers), has a new book out, The Provinces of Touch. The blurb for this one reads:

Jun, a healer with an unpredictable gift, yearns to overcome his troubled past. His solitude is shattered by the arrival of Tlar, a wounded young man from a distant land. Helping this stranger opens up new worlds filled with adventure -- but also brings shocking danger and tragedy. Can Jun finally find true friendship and love? Or will his actions cause a catastrophic invasion and the extinction of his people?

Here's her announcement post for The Provinces of Touch, as well as the Amazon page and the Smashwords page.

I also recommend this extra piece of promo art.

Full disclosure: I got to read an earlier draft. I highly recommend it, and am looking forward to reading my new copy of the final novel! It's gentle, thoughtful, character-driven fantasy, with interesting cultures and worldbuilding, and people I want to get to know all over again.
dorinda: John Kennex and Dorian with their heads very close, both looking down, very serious. (john_dorian_amber)
I am on vacation (a long-awaited and hard-earned vacation, in my opinion), and am finally unwinding from recent stresses. It feels luxurious and cherry-on-top to ALSO now get MULTIPLE gifts from this year's Night on Fic Mountain small-fandom fic and art exchange!!

New this year, you could ask and offer art as well as fic if you wanted, so in my requests I checked the art box as well as the fic box. And I got three pictures and one story, every single one of them an utter delight!:

Dorian is doing everything he can to keep John warm and his blood from spill out, while they wait to be found.

A beautiful angsty hurt/comfort image, with protective-Dorian who you can tell is experiencing a flood of emotion, with injured-John held so tenderly in his arms. SNIFF! But the author was kind enough to reassure me in an author's note that they will be rescued. \o/

Stephen and Jack

A sketch of Stephen Maturin, with Jack silhouetted in the background. Such lovely detail, all of which combines in a very Stephen-like tone and pose, and I swear that Jack is CHARACTERIZED by the simplest touches in a little silhouette.

And then two Aubrey-Maturin Star Trek AUs, one art and one story:

Stephen brings home alien animals~

Science-officer-naturalist Stephen is cradling a little alien creature that obviously loves him but is dubious about starship-captain-Jack who wants to pet it, which is SO accurate to the books, and so adorable!!

Stephen and Jack, and an evening in an alien jail.

Wounded starship captain Jack, and Vulcan-hybrid Stephen, stranded in a cell on an alien world, looking after each other. So many little touches perfectly translated into the Star Trek setting, such well-characterized interaction and hurt/comfort, SO satisfying, om nom nom nom.

Pardon me while I wallow about in my embarrassment of riches! *flings handfuls of Fic Mountain around like confetti*

Fischer returns to Denmark, only to be greeted by a stranger in La Cour’s flat and a murder near the German border. It’s not the homecoming he had hoped for, but at least he’s back with Rejseholdet.

Aaaaaaa Rejseholdet|Unit One, Fischer/La Cour! I am SO HAPPY YAAAAAAAAAY \o/ \o/ \o/

It's nearly 10,000 words of case story, with the characters we know and love, and could be an episode of its own--except that for some reason the show never had Fischer and La Cour finally figuring out what they need from each other. This story remedies that!

I am so delighted!! ♥________♥ It has had me smiling at random intervals all the morning long. Definitely a keeper, to stash in my heart (and on my phone), for cheer-up re-reading any time and every time.

I hope your Yuletide is going even half as well. :D

When Dorian begins to malfunction, John relents on letting him come home, in order to keep an eye on him and hide it from the Department.

Om nom nom, nice sizeable story with juicy worldbuilding. This picks up on the show's hanging mystery of the human memory fragments uncovered in the depths of Dorian's mind, and uses it to explore Dorian and his worries about his future and his place in the world. Sigh! It's such a shame we lost that show so soon, but I think fans really do it a good turn.

Edited after reveals: the author is [personal profile] franzeska, and she also added another vid-tidbit (...vidbit?), which is terrifying and brilliantly inevitable: . \o/

Yaaaaay, it is Yuletide already! I was having dinner with family, and in the grand Yuletide tradition, toward the end of the evening I was desperately looking forward to hurrying home and ripping the figurative gift-wrap off the story for me:

Summary: Mike is still an idiot. Tino is still unreasonably persistent.

WOOOO, SLASHCROBATS. \o/ Mike is trying so hard to be seedy and alienating and aggressive--but for sommme reason when presented with Tino's cheerful confidence and then his total trust, he cannot quite manage it. :D Their clocks keep the same time in many different ways. ♥

The author also included a link to a vid, believe it or not, which is a brassy, intense delight. OH, YOU BOYS. *hugs them* *clonks their adorable heads together*

This morning I watched a Tony Zhou "Every Frame a Painting" video I missed when it first went up (this May), about the lateral tracking shot in film. It's here:

It's short and interesting, like his other videos, and demonstrates with some great examples (the one from "Up", for instance, where he does a nice job comparing other possible transition choices).

But I still feel like something remains unexplored there. Well--I mean, of course, it's a complicated topic, and the video's like six and a half minutes long. But still. Something else is on the tip of my tongue.

Maybe something more specific about the way it's often used for strong & direct contrast/juxtaposition (I'm thinking of times it moves 'through a wall' to show us something happening in a different space and/or time), so it's as if the move from one rectangular shape over to another distinct rectangular shape is like...turning a page? Moving to the next comic panel/frame? As if it's doing the sort of juxtaposition work that a smash cut often does, but uses the sideways drifting to include the passing of time and/or greater space than a smash cut does. (He does mention the time/space thing, but I guess I wish he could've gone into it more.)

Anyway, I found it really interesting, and you might too. I highly recommend the rest of his videos as well--the one on visual comedy in film as exemplified by Edgar Wright, I think about that one a lot, especially his examples of how so much modern American comedy film has become SO VISUALLY LAZY. (Besides, any excuse for me to watch clips of Edgar Wright's work is extremely welcome!)

For More Joy Day, I have a link to a video I only found out about today, so apologies if you've seen this already... no wait, what am I saying, no apologies for this!:

It's the official video for the song "Happy", by Pharrell Williams. And it makes me happy, not just because the song is so positive and the groove is so smooth (almost hypnotically so), but also because of the people. All the people. So many different people.

The bigger the city I live in and the more people I have to be around in crowded circumstances, the more misanthropic I sometimes get. Since I moved here, I sometimes find myself having gone completely, you know, >:-( ARGH PEOPLE. I mean, even more than I used to.

But something like this, it actually makes me celebrate all these different people. Being happy. And I'd call that more joy, for sure.
