I definitely let time get away from me--Yuletide nominations end on Friday! (It actually technically ends at 5am Saturday morning, US Eastern Time, but of course I like to sleep Friday nights, so it'll have to be by bedtime on Friday night.)

Who else has nominated so far?

Only three fandoms, as usual. Hmm.

Okay, looking at the nom self-report spreadsheet, someone says they've nominated Almost Human, including John and Dorian. So that takes a load off my mind! And, happy surprise, someone who isn't me nominated Sinbad (TV), including Sinbad and Gunnar (and others). Whew.

Someone reports having nominated Space: Above and Beyond, which is a delight to hear--but, the characters they nominated were West, Vansen, Hawkes, and Damphousse. Without McQueen in some fashion, it's hard for me to get interested. {{{McQueen}}}

Someone reports having nominated the 1958 movie The Defiant Ones! So good, so upsetting, so slashy. I had a vague story idea for that once upon a time. Not sure I'd be able just to throw myself open to write someone else's request, especially given the historical context and serious racial issues one would perforce have to grapple with, but I'll keep it in mind.

I'm thinking I'll nominate Rejseholdet, since that remains so very rare still (even though I have had some wonderful stories written for me, which I wholeheartedly recommend! I am just also v. greedy. :D ).

Dare I gamble that someone else will nominate Master & Commander? (Or the O'Brian books, though I don't feel as confident when offering to write bookfic, for fear of people requesting het and/or Diana.) Maybe I should, just in case.

For a third, many choices jostle in my head. The Sting, of course, which is a best beloved (and also, being a movie, provides a nice short canon for people in a hurry, whether pinch-hitting or trying something new or whatever. :D). Shetland, though I'm not sure who else wants the kind of stories I'd want to offer/request (Jimmy/Duncan, anyone?)

Summary:

Stephen's letter, folded inside his jacket, pressed against his heart like a hot poker.
To Captain Jno. Aubrey, R.N., HMS Surprise:
I ask you to sail on as scheduled. Do not come looking for me.

This was the first time I offered Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin--I only offered the movie this year, to get my feet wet more manageably and keep my canon review under control, although I have now read all the books at least twice. (hugs books) My recipient said she likes hurt/comfort, and I like hurt/comfort, so I gladly gave Jack a bit of a physical going-over along with some worry & angst for both parties (poor Jack. But he's so physically robust! I'm sure the worrying and angsting hurt him worse.). And a happy ending, of course, because I am not currently my own evil clone or wearing a sash in the Mirror Universe.

I flapped about over some tangles in the throughline, but in the end I really enjoyed writing it. I intend to write some more Jack/Stephen--in fact I have written something else , which I'll be posting a little later in the new year.

As for my cornucopia of gifts, get this! The big Sinbad story, AND the Sting pretend-couple story, were BY THE SAME PERSON, [personal profile] damkianna!! CAN you even believe it. I am amazed all over again--it's like she spelunked into my brain, and look at all the words she wrote while she was in there! *confetti*

The Rejseholdet story is by [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant, and this is the only one I actually (tentatively) guessed. Chatting with [personal profile] sakana17 in email I was like, hmmm, I wonder if that was halotolerant--she's such a fantastic writer and also I know she loves Fischer/La Cour... WELL LOOKY HERE. :D :D :D

And the Shetland story is by an author new to me, [archiveofourown.org profile] idareu2bme. I love all the new discoveries Yuletide helps me make!

I had such an amazing, fantastic Yuletide this year! I can scarcely believe it. Along with my assigned story, I received three (3!) treats, and they are all SO GOOD. Soooo goooood. Tailored perfectly to my interests, all in-character and well-written and well-paced and slashy and so emotionally satisfying.

Honestly, true story, as I was reading them on Christmas Eve, I kept stopping and looking up at the ceiling and just beaming with that inner bubbling feeling of utter squee. They make me so happy!

(And, I've never yet done an actual pimping post for any of these sources, but if you want to see them and cannot otherwise, please do drop me a line!)

1) SINBAD A scattering of pictures on tumblr.
First off, the assigned story, which is a Gunnar/Sinbad story for "Sinbad", the short-lived 2012 UK TV series, a show with a tone that reminds me of the Merlin-Xena-Hercules constellation sometimes...not quite historical, but magical-mythico-folklorish, with occasional purposeful anachronisms. Sinbad is a street urchin who ends up bereaved and cursed, and in the course of trying to save himself, he meets some other outcasts of one kind or another who basically become his found family. Especially the melancholy, protective ex-Viking. :D

The story posits that Gunnar (said Northman) is a literal berserker, a bear-shifter. The spot-on voices and characterizations of the whole crew! The layers of details in setting and worldbuilding! The pining! The mystery of why Gunnar doesn't shift back, and how he does, and the very satisfying answer!

Characters: Gunnar (Sinbad), Sinbad (Sinbad), Rina (Sinbad), Anwar (Sinbad), Tiger (Sinbad), Cook (Sinbad), Nala (Sinbad)
Additional Tags: Animal Transformation, Mutual Pining, Nonverbal Communication, Post-Canon
Summary:

There had not been time, Gunnar told himself afterward; there had not been any other way. But it was not true. There was always a choice.

(Or: Gunnar is a werebear. Sinbad has some issues with this; and, as it turns out, so does Gunnar.)

2) REJSEHOLDET A bunch of pics/gifs on tumblr.
A treat of nearly 10K words, if you can believe it, for Rejseholdet aka Unit One, the Danish cop show from the early-mid 2000s perhaps most notable for having Mads Mikkelsen in it (super-hot, natch). Whose character, the ambitious, aggressive Allan Fischer, has such wonderful partner and slash chemistry with the sensitive, secretive empath Thomas La Cour.

This story starts pre-canon and ends post-canon, and follows the entire arc of Fischer and La Cour's relationship, from awkward first meeting through to the finally-settled intimate relationship they had gradually been reaching for but took years to figure out. The characterizations are so so solid, and watching them learn to understand their inchoate need for each other is a sheer delight!

3) THE STING (1973)
The classic Paul Newman/Robert Redford con-artist movie, if you needed telling. :D One of my very favorite movies of all time, a festival of competence kink, with Newman melancholy and worrying and gravely handsome, and Redford callow and eager and luminous, playing con men who meet and mesh (and make such heart eyes at each other oh god), and prevail over the forces of evil.

You guys I got a Henry/Johnny PRETEND RELATIONSHIP STORYYYYYY. So perfect for two grifters, to have to fake a closeted affair to draw a blackmailer out of the woodwork so they can nab him. And of course, it turns out Henry has a secret that makes the prospect of getting handsy with Johnny no hardship--except for the fact that he knows it's just for the con and will all be over soon. (OR WILL IT. :D ) It crackles with the energy both of the con and of desire, underlaid with secrets sizzling just under the surface.

4) SHETLAND
The source I fell for most recently, a Scottish drama about a police detective-inspector who lives and works in the Shetland Islands. Jimmy Perez is a thoughtful, kind, determined, melancholy man who lives to protect his communities and look after his daughter Cassie. And he has a fascinating relationship with his daughter's biological father, the more cynical/shades-of-gray figure Duncan Hunter. Jimmy and Duncan get along like grownups, which feels really rare for TV--co-parenting the best they can, communicating with each other, being supportive (even when they conflict).

The story is a quiet, tender scene set after the end of the most recent season, season 3. Jimmy, as could have been predicted, is hollowed-out by serious Empty Nest Syndrome, and Duncan looks after him in a comfortingly bossy, intimate, straightforward, comforting way. Just what I needed, and Jimmy too. ♥

ONE THING: Soooooo what happened is, a couple days ago I sprained my ankle. I was trudging home with a million other worker ants, took a bad step somewhere among the terrible uneven concrete across the street from my workplace, and BLAMMO I and my stuff were sprawled all over the road. In the rain. With a bunch of people standing over me.

Ugh. Sometimes I think the secondary embarrassment is almost neck-and-neck with the actual ankle pain. (But then I have a flashback to the terrible noise my ankle ligament made, and I stop thinking that.)

It took a couple minutes for the initial pain to subside enough for me to tell it wasn't broken, and then the kindly bystanders gathered my belongings, hoisted me up, and put me into a cab. I've been Resting/Icing/Compressing/Elevating like a mofo, although unfortunately I've also had a long couple of workdays since then, one of which was twelve hours long.

On the bright side, it could have been SO much worse. With a good Ace bandage and care in moving around, plus UberXs/cabs to and from work, I managed my workdays okay, and it's looking much better and increasing in mobility. I've had much worse sprains in my day, with crutches and whatnot, and I'm grateful this wasn't one of those.

Still no fun, though. And I have another very demanding workday coming up later this week, probably 13 hours, with a lot of standing and moving around. So I'll be RICEing all week in the hope that it'll continue to improve at this pace.

ANOTHER THING: While I'm sitting in my chair with the foot propped up, my fancies have turned to thoughts of Yuletide nominations. Just a week to get my noms in! Hmmm. What are you nominating?

I haven't even started to parse my final choices--see above, re: ankle and stressful work schedule--but it does seem that the Aubrey-Maturin novels, as well as the Master & Commander movie, is all safely under the limit, so that's a possibility. Now that I've finished the books and am re-reading them all again, I'm starting to feel delightfully immersed. (And of course the movie is engraved on my brain lobes, so.)

Another thing that leaps to mind is Shetland, the BBC Scotland show that [personal profile] sakana17, [personal profile] klia, and [personal profile] thevetia turned me on to. Well-written, beautifully-filmed detective drama set on the islands of the Shetland archipelago, and I adore the main character (other characters as well, of course, but, ♥ JIMMY ♥ ).

Rejseholdet|Unit One again, I think, to make sure it gets in there.

Shockingly, even though Black Sails looks to be just over a thousand stories on AO3 alone, using the yuletide bookmarklet on them reveals that there are actually fewer than 600 that are in English, complete, and over a thousand words long! Add that to the hundred-and-thirty-some that are on ff.net, and it still looks eligible!

I'm not sure I feel ready to write Black Sails (and by the way, I finished season 2 last week! I'll give that its own post, hopefully tomorrow), but if I'm not, it still might be nice to ask for.

That's four fandoms, though, and I can only nominate three. I have some mulling to do, for sure.

Happy New Year, everybody! And happy Yuletide reveals day, which I always enjoy.

I wrote one assignment and one treat this year. My assignment was "The Invisible Man" (TV 2000), and the treat was for "Rejseholdet | Unit One":

As in Yuletide 2012, this year I got to write for my extremely-beloved-but-cancelled show from back in 2000, Sci Fi's "The Invisible Man", with long lanky Darien Fawkes, the science experiment gone wrong; and short intense Bobby Hobbes, his antagonistic teammate turned deeply loving partner. And oh, I just love the characters and their milieu so much aaaaaaa. This story actually came from the germ of an idea I had for my 2012 assignment but didn't get very far into at the time. It unfolded very differently this year than it would have before, so I'm glad I waited!

And I was dying to write a little Rejseholdet, to dip my toe in, hopefully in advance of writing something longer at a later date. (Me? Writing long? PERISH THE THOUGHT, she said, eyeing her 20K Yuletide assignment. *g*) I so wanted to give a little present to [personal profile] sakana17, who got me hooked on Rejseholdet to begin with.

Speaking of whom, it turns out she is the one who wrote my fantastic Rejseholdet Yuletide gift this year! She had me going for quite a while there, during our innocuous 'oh so what're you writing oh that sounds nice' chit-chat. Heh.

Anyway, I thought that the episode with the bondage cage, which both La Cour and Fischer end up folding themselves into at different times, really cried out for a little epilogue. With kissin' in. \o/

It's nearly 10,000 words of case story, with the characters we know and love, and could be an episode of its own--except that for some reason the show never had Fischer and La Cour finally figuring out what they need from each other. This story remedies that!

I am so delighted!! ♥________♥ It has had me smiling at random intervals all the morning long. Definitely a keeper, to stash in my heart (and on my phone), for cheer-up re-reading any time and every time.

Looking back in my journal, this is the same day that Yuletide assignments went out last year. And just like last year, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind myself of Toothpaste For Dinner's chillingly accurate map of my creative process:

Toothpastefordinner.com comic, 'The Creative Process'

I cracked the whip at myself last year to avoid the panic and crying portion of the program, and ended up so glad I did. So I better dig that whip out again and see if it still cracks!

Good luck to everybody who's playing! And if you're sitting out this year, there are plenty of letters out there you might enjoy browsing, to get inspiration for writing treats:

Letters in database form

Letters in a Google docs spreadsheet. There's a "Fandom Listing" tab at the lower left if you want to see them by fandom.

These aren't every single letter, of course, only the ones people voluntarily submit to the letters post on the Yuletide comm. But there's a lot to peruse, should you feel perusish.

Happy Yuletide to all, and may story ideas start leaping into your brain in 3...2...1...

Happy endings for that last post!:

* I got my laptop back from the laptop hospital, all fixed up and spruce. We had the rest of the long weekend to cuddle and bond. :D Now to catch up on the computery things I need to get done...

* I'm finished with the antibiotics, and had my followup with the ENT today. All better! And this time she had the scope with the exterior screen, so she gave me a look at my throatly inner workings, to see how they look when they're healthy. Cooooool. Stomach is settled back down now as well, and I am still enjoying the kefir. Nomf.

* Still no words written on anything new, not entirely sure what the problem is there--but I did get some productive revision done on a betaed thing, thanks to [personal profile] marycrawford encouraging me into it.

* The last of the Nutella is gone, but I baked a cake. I am too quick to let the teeny-slantiness of my oven discourage me from actual baking--this turned out pretty nice.

Let's see, in other news...the Yuletide tagset for this year is up, and delightful. Rejseholdet|Unit One is there, Sinbad (TV) is there, Peacemakers is there. *rubs hands*

Almost Human is there, with a larger tagset than I remember from last time: John and Dorian of course, Rudy, Sandra Maldonado, Valerie Stahl, Richard Paul, MX-43 gets its own character slot, and now also Danica (the next model after Dorian, the kickass scary XRN played by the fantastic Gina Carano).

Some wonderful person out there nominated The Invisible Man (TV 2000), with Darien, Bobby, Arnaud, and Claire. No The Sting, but somebody did nominate Spy Game, with Nathan, Tom, and Elizabeth. Elfquest is there, but the character nominations seem a little...odd, or at least oddly specific. Two canonical f/m pairs (Nightfall, Redlance, Moonshade, Strongbow), Skywise, and then two of the chieftesses of ancient days (Rahnee the She Wolf and Huntress Skyfire). No Cutter, weirdly; given the things I'd be interested in writing for EQ at the moment, I suspect I may not offer it this time around.

(Speaking of oddish nominations--the movie Hot Fuzz is in, yay, but the four characters are Nicholas and Danny, Frank Butterman...and Amanda Paver. The townsperson who rides the bike. That last one seems almost arbitrary, unless someone out there has been beefing her up as an almost-OC or something.)

No Man from UNCLE TV show (I expected that; the movie on the other hand is included), but The Wild Wild West is in, with Artemus and Jim. ♥

Now it's time to nail down my list of requests/offers, and imagine what I might write for each assignment. I always feel better when I've put a bit of thought into it--not that I'll definitely use whatever ideas I come up with before I see the actual assignment and letter, but I like to have some plans in the bullpen just in case.
