Happy New Year! And it is Yuletide reveal-time! *\o/*

I wrote two stories this year, one "Almost Human" assignment (a long one, in fact the longest story I've completed so far), and one "Sinbad" (2012) treat that just sort of popped up in my head right toward the deadline:

When a Man's an Empty Kettle (40429 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Almost Human
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dorian/John Kennex
Characters: Dorian (Almost Human), John Kennex, Sandra Maldonado, Rudy Lom, Richard Paul
Additional Tags: Fake/Pretend Relationship, Undercover as a Couple, Robot Sex, Consent, Hand Jobs, Frottage, Intercrural Sex, Post-Canon, Robots, Free Will, Sex Robots, Science Fiction, First Time, Robot/Human Relationships, Canon Disabled Character, Prosthesis
Summary:

It wasn't like John minded going undercover with Dorian. No problem posing as Dorian's owner. At a private sexbot show. Where he would have to...Oh, shit.

Bare Wood (1644 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sinbad (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Gunnar/Sinbad
Characters: Gunnar (Sinbad), Sinbad (Sinbad)
Additional Tags: Boats and Ships, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Minor Injuries
Summary:

When the rest of the crew is away, that's the time for Gunnar to tend to the ship. He doesn't expect to be tended to himself.

It was funny--I had a strong feeling for the whole week before assignments that I was going to get "Almost Human", so I was tossing around story ideas, and then I thought... OMG UNDERCOVER/PRETEND COUPLE. Because John is so emotionally repressed and lonely, and Dorian is thoughtful and communicative and observant. And I thought, if circumstances forced them to be intimate, John would panic (especially given all his canonical issues and history with 1) robots, 1a) sexbots, 2) synthetic tech, namely his prosthetic leg, and 3) being lied to/having an intimate relationship basically simulated). And to help with the panic, Dorian (very emotionally willing and fluent, and in this story having been privately developing deeper feelings for John) might try to increase the emotional depth of the intimacy, wrongly thinking that it would help John relax if he knew it was real on Dorian's part and not pretending. Uh-oh, problem. *rubs hands at the prospect of my beautiful slashpair suffering. Ahem.*

Faithful to my stated intentions to get started ASAP, I got the basics sketched out and started laying words down pretty soon. Which was a really good thing, as it turns out, given how long it got! *facepalm* But I ended up feeling good about the storyline, and about the OCs, especially the one who ends up being most important. It all sort of unfolded into many of the themes I seem compelled to chew on with robotslash (or more accurately I guess, self-aware-android-slash), like autonomy and consent and whatnot.

My poor betas [personal profile] marycrawford, [personal profile] klia, and [personal profile] mollyamory only had like a week, total, for reading, making suggestions, and giving me time for revisions. They were absolute troupers, and fixed some really big things (especially given my observed tendency toward the end to be like, "and then they worked some stuff out and were happy *handwave* *handwave* I am tired nao". Thanks, you guys! ♥

So I had uploaded my final edits, and was ready to unwind at last. ...But then I came home from work with an idea for a treat story in "Sinbad" (2012), and actually wrote almost all of it in one night, which for me is not usually a thing. I don't know what happened--I think my writerly-engine, having been revving so high for the entire Yuletide period, was still spinning. So I did a little scene between Gunnar (the responsible, protective, melancholy ex-Viking) and Sinbad (the impetuous, demonstrative, striving young hero), and felt happy and warm about the whole thing. [personal profile] marycrawford betaed again at super-short notice, and again fixed it right up!

I was delighted to discover that I have apparently not lost the ability to write things that weigh less than a metric ton. Whew! For a while there I was worried. :D
