Hello, Raremaleslash creator!

Thanks for signing up to make me something! I know my letter explanations often sound pretty ficcish, but I would also love some art, whichever you're offering.

(Also, let me say: you'll notice it's not uncommon for me to ask for the same fandoms a lot. If you've been assigned to me previously, please do not ever think this is because I don't still love your gift! It's just that these pairings are so small and I love them so much--I crave another cake, to go with my previous delicious cakes. In my cake hoard. :9 )

This year, I wrote for the Danish cop show "Rejseholdet". The two-part finale is emotional and dramatic, practically fic on the screen--Fischer is seemingly fired and in prison! But really he's undercover, known only to La Cour and the chief of police! Fischer suffers! La Cour has to watch him suffer and thereby suffers himself! Etc. :D

But at the end, Fischer is unceremoniously sent out of the country, to a secondment at Europol in The Netherlands. And I've always thought, man, there is WAY too much unresolved trauma left hanging there, not to mention the UST!

Lucky for me, my recipient [personal profile] chantefable is totally simpatico...she had actually written Rejseholdet for me in 2017, for Night on Fic Mountain. \o/ So I could indulge myself, and do a post-series fixit. Which [personal profile] chantefable has described as "It is about sad grown-up Danish cops overcoming sadness and miscommunication and pining related to a previous case and its aftermath", to which I would say, yes!

Dear Writer: Hello! We got matched, or you selected me as a pinch hit--either way, thank you so much for being willing to write something for me in a tiny fandom of my heart. I really appreciate you. ♥

Your offer to write these fandoms means we both love them. So I put myself in your hands without hesitation--if you already have an idea, please do go ahead and write it. Enjoy yourself, have fun! I want you to have a good time with your own story, and not stress out.

Duuuudes the Night On Fic Mountain 2017 collection is open, and I got THREE PRESENTS. \o/ Almost Human, AND Rejseholdet, AND a Jack & Stephen treat! Check this out:

...oh wait, huh, weird. I only just now noticed that two of these pieces have no "Share" button at the top. But it shows up on the third one. So the 'share' function can be disabled? I've never seen that option. What's that about, I wonder?

Anyway, no biggie, I shall share the first two the old fashioned way, uphill both ways in the snow:

First, a really lovely romantic piece of John/Dorian art called "Halfway Till Bliss". I adore the differing expressions, and the subtleties of their faces, and Dorian's eyelashes, and John's hair. And KISSIN. <3

https://archiveofourown.org/works/11205894

Then, a wonderfully grounded and real-feeling Rejseholdet story, "The (Irregular) Right Direction": it's set ten years post-canon, with Fischer permanently settled in EU law-enforcement bureaucracy, but with something unsettled and restless humming deep within him. Hmmmm, I wonder what he's still missing? :D

https://archiveofourown.org/works/11209839

And finally, a touching and nuanced Master & Commander (and/or O'Brian books) Jack & Stephen story, "Why Darwin Discovered Evolution", which has a Share button, thusly:

1815: Napoleon surrenders, and is exiled to St Helena. The British Navy, after seventeen years of war, retires ships, crews and captains. John Barrow, Second Secretary to the Admiralty, begins a programme of exploration which will last until 1845 and will include, in 1835, Charles Darwin's five year voyage of discovery in the Beagle.

In England, Jack Aubrey languishes on the Captains’ List, and Stephen Maturin chases moths.

Oh, Stephen. He loves Jack SO MUCH. ♥____♥ (And vice-versa, of course. Sigh!)
dorinda: In "Brideshead Revisited" (1981), Sebastian and Charles, arms around each other, look out to sea. (Brideshead_sea)
Dear author or artist,

Thank you so much for making something for me! Above all, I'd like you to have fun and create something you enjoy, so any other blatherings here are purely optional for reals. Just in case they might help. If you already have an idea, go for it!

Some of my general preferences:

First times. Happy or at least hopeful endings (that doesn't rule out bittersweet or melancholy tones, and needn't be fluffy...just no unalloyed sadness/darkness/loss please.).

I requested slash relationships, though for me that doesn't automatically require explicit sex. I mean, sex is great if the story or artwork calls for it. But don't feel hemmed in; it's entirely up to you. For me, slash is first about the depth of connection and intimacy between the characters, however it's expressed. I am, I admit, a sucker for tenderness. Especially coming from a repressed character for whom tenderness itself is an admission of vulnerability.

Some of the tropes and approaches I enjoy: words that camouflage deeper/unspoken meanings, protectiveness, worry, extreme competence (with honest weakness), hurt/comfort, chosen families, uncovering a secret, partners against the world, nurturing via food/drink/warmth. (Also, in stories I must admit I like past tense, unless there's a reason for present tense.)

Don't be afraid of classic frameworks if you like 'em! I mentioned hurt/comfort, but I also won't turn up my nose at Having To Share A Bed, Huddling for Warmth, Pretend Couple, Undercover as Rentboy, situations where one suffers or sacrifices for the other, rescues, stranded somewhere (idyllic or non-), etc.

A few thoughts by fandom, alphabetically:

The Sting (1973) )

dorinda: Someone writing at a desk while wearing a large helmet with an oxygen tube attached (a device called "The Isolator"). (isolator)
Just a followup, Fic Mountain-wise. I ended up nominating:

* Almost Human, John/Dorian

* Rejseholdet, Fischer/La Cour

* The Sting, Henry/Johnny (and also Kid Twist in the character set)

And I added Nero Wolfe to the Nero Wolfe character set.

I feel so lucky re: Almost Human! The rule is that in order to qualify, a fandom has to have fewer than 500 stories (complete, in English, 1000 words or over). And when I ran a filter on Almost Human, its total came to 497. Yikes! That was a close one.

So I nominated it immediately. Once approved it gets to stay in, even if 4 more stories roll in in the meantime, and it has been approved. Whew! \o/

This is basically a new story? Kind of? Or at least, I'm not sure if anybody but [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant ever saw it--I wrote it as a flashfic challenge when tagged by [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant on tumblr, but never posted it here. It's super short, a little over 200 words, but I did want to put it onto AO3 to keep all my stuff in one place. And I thought it might be amusing. :D (The condoms in the surveillance kit are canonical fact. Oh, Rejseholdet. ♥ )

I had such an amazing, fantastic Yuletide this year! I can scarcely believe it. Along with my assigned story, I received three (3!) treats, and they are all SO GOOD. Soooo goooood. Tailored perfectly to my interests, all in-character and well-written and well-paced and slashy and so emotionally satisfying.

Honestly, true story, as I was reading them on Christmas Eve, I kept stopping and looking up at the ceiling and just beaming with that inner bubbling feeling of utter squee. They make me so happy!

(And, I've never yet done an actual pimping post for any of these sources, but if you want to see them and cannot otherwise, please do drop me a line!)

1) SINBAD A scattering of pictures on tumblr.
First off, the assigned story, which is a Gunnar/Sinbad story for "Sinbad", the short-lived 2012 UK TV series, a show with a tone that reminds me of the Merlin-Xena-Hercules constellation sometimes...not quite historical, but magical-mythico-folklorish, with occasional purposeful anachronisms. Sinbad is a street urchin who ends up bereaved and cursed, and in the course of trying to save himself, he meets some other outcasts of one kind or another who basically become his found family. Especially the melancholy, protective ex-Viking. :D

The story posits that Gunnar (said Northman) is a literal berserker, a bear-shifter. The spot-on voices and characterizations of the whole crew! The layers of details in setting and worldbuilding! The pining! The mystery of why Gunnar doesn't shift back, and how he does, and the very satisfying answer!

There had not been time, Gunnar told himself afterward; there had not been any other way. But it was not true. There was always a choice.

(Or: Gunnar is a werebear. Sinbad has some issues with this; and, as it turns out, so does Gunnar.)

2) REJSEHOLDET A bunch of pics/gifs on tumblr.
A treat of nearly 10K words, if you can believe it, for Rejseholdet aka Unit One, the Danish cop show from the early-mid 2000s perhaps most notable for having Mads Mikkelsen in it (super-hot, natch). Whose character, the ambitious, aggressive Allan Fischer, has such wonderful partner and slash chemistry with the sensitive, secretive empath Thomas La Cour.

This story starts pre-canon and ends post-canon, and follows the entire arc of Fischer and La Cour's relationship, from awkward first meeting through to the finally-settled intimate relationship they had gradually been reaching for but took years to figure out. The characterizations are so so solid, and watching them learn to understand their inchoate need for each other is a sheer delight!

3) THE STING (1973)
The classic Paul Newman/Robert Redford con-artist movie, if you needed telling. :D One of my very favorite movies of all time, a festival of competence kink, with Newman melancholy and worrying and gravely handsome, and Redford callow and eager and luminous, playing con men who meet and mesh (and make such heart eyes at each other oh god), and prevail over the forces of evil.

You guys I got a Henry/Johnny PRETEND RELATIONSHIP STORYYYYYY. So perfect for two grifters, to have to fake a closeted affair to draw a blackmailer out of the woodwork so they can nab him. And of course, it turns out Henry has a secret that makes the prospect of getting handsy with Johnny no hardship--except for the fact that he knows it's just for the con and will all be over soon. (OR WILL IT. :D ) It crackles with the energy both of the con and of desire, underlaid with secrets sizzling just under the surface.

4) SHETLAND
The source I fell for most recently, a Scottish drama about a police detective-inspector who lives and works in the Shetland Islands. Jimmy Perez is a thoughtful, kind, determined, melancholy man who lives to protect his communities and look after his daughter Cassie. And he has a fascinating relationship with his daughter's biological father, the more cynical/shades-of-gray figure Duncan Hunter. Jimmy and Duncan get along like grownups, which feels really rare for TV--co-parenting the best they can, communicating with each other, being supportive (even when they conflict).

The story is a quiet, tender scene set after the end of the most recent season, season 3. Jimmy, as could have been predicted, is hollowed-out by serious Empty Nest Syndrome, and Duncan looks after him in a comfortingly bossy, intimate, straightforward, comforting way. Just what I needed, and Jimmy too. ♥

As in Yuletide 2012, this year I got to write for my extremely-beloved-but-cancelled show from back in 2000, Sci Fi's "The Invisible Man", with long lanky Darien Fawkes, the science experiment gone wrong; and short intense Bobby Hobbes, his antagonistic teammate turned deeply loving partner. And oh, I just love the characters and their milieu so much aaaaaaa. This story actually came from the germ of an idea I had for my 2012 assignment but didn't get very far into at the time. It unfolded very differently this year than it would have before, so I'm glad I waited!

And I was dying to write a little Rejseholdet, to dip my toe in, hopefully in advance of writing something longer at a later date. (Me? Writing long? PERISH THE THOUGHT, she said, eyeing her 20K Yuletide assignment. *g*) I so wanted to give a little present to [personal profile] sakana17, who got me hooked on Rejseholdet to begin with.

Speaking of whom, it turns out she is the one who wrote my fantastic Rejseholdet Yuletide gift this year! She had me going for quite a while there, during our innocuous 'oh so what're you writing oh that sounds nice' chit-chat. Heh.

Anyway, I thought that the episode with the bondage cage, which both La Cour and Fischer end up folding themselves into at different times, really cried out for a little epilogue. With kissin' in. \o/

It's nearly 10,000 words of case story, with the characters we know and love, and could be an episode of its own--except that for some reason the show never had Fischer and La Cour finally figuring out what they need from each other. This story remedies that!

I am so delighted!! ♥________♥ It has had me smiling at random intervals all the morning long. Definitely a keeper, to stash in my heart (and on my phone), for cheer-up re-reading any time and every time.

Yuletide nominations are open! (Link goes to the Dreamwidth version of the admin post giving all kinds of helpful links and info.)

You can nominate up to 3 fandoms with a maximum of 4 characters each. Sooo, what are you nominating this year?

As for me, I have two definites, and I'm mulling on the third:

* Sinbad (TV), which was the sadly short-lived UK TV series from 2012 (and for which I wrote the Gunnar/Sinbad treat Bare Wood last Yuletide).

Characters will be Gunnar and Sinbad...I could add two others according to the rules, but I'm not really aiming to focus on anyone else, although I do like the rest of them and would enjoy them in a Gunnar/Sinbad story, since they are all such found-family. (Well, except I'm not very interested in Tiger. No offense, Tiger, but I wish we could just have had Nala the whole time instead.)

* Rejseholdet | Unit One, which was a Danish TV crime procedural from the early 2000s, perhaps most notable these days for having Mads Mikkelsen in it, but it's also really enjoyable across the board. Atmospheric, terrific characters, strong female lead, etc. And Fischer (Mikkelsen's character) has such great chemistry and slashiness with fellow detective La Cour.

Characters will be Allan Fischer and Thomas La Cour. [personal profile] movies_michelle idly mentioned the other day that she'd enjoy seeing them Undercover As Gay, and then my brain imploded (in the good way). She certainly knows the sort of thing that Dorindas enjoy! :D

I'm not sure about who else...probably Ingrid and IP, who'd be my next favorites. I do love Gaby (and her friendship with Ingrid) on the show but am not too interested in her in fic per se (although you know, she and Ingrid do seem well suited for femslash).

This reminds me, I should do a post or posts soon about Sinbad and Rejseholdet|Unit One! Just to give people a glimpse of the shows/characters, if they don't know them already (and with fandoms this small they very well might not). Because they are delightful and provide slashy goodness!

As for a third nomination, I'm not really sure. Almost Human, perhaps, although I'm thinking/hoping someone else might nominate it before I do? It's definitely nowhere near as small on AO3 as Sinbad and (especially) Rejseholdet|Unit One.

What else might I want to nominate so I can offer it, hmmm... Invisible Man? Peacemakers? Elfquest? Maybe one of my beloved movies, like Spy Game or The Sting?

SO MANY CHOICES. SO VERY MANY TEENY TINY SLASHY CHOICES.
