Happy New Year! Uh, belatedly! Time really got away from me...I fell ill right after Christmas, and am just now starting to play catch-up.

I got to write The Sting this year!:

What Wouldn't I Do For That Man (11779 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Sting (1973)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Henry Gondorff/Johnny Hooker
Characters: Henry Gondorff, Johnny Hooker (The Sting), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Con Artists, 1930s, Gay Bar, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Nonverbal Communication, First Time, Post-Canon
Summary: Johnny strained for the faintly crackling feeling of awareness he'd gotten used to, looked for those tiny shifts of head, hands, stance—but nothing doing. Henry's attention was fully on the matinee idol and the idol's on him, murmuring in their own closed circle, while Johnny watched them like a stray through a cafe window.

Okay, so, this was new. He'd gotten on top of every knuckleball Henry had thrown him so far. You just had to watch, and then you'd see. Nobody ever said it was always going to be a goddamn delight.

Alphabetotter had some intriguing prompts, including an interest in Johnny discovering a really big intersection between the grifter and queer communities, and that snagged me by the imagination right away. There's a lot more historical context I find thought-provoking but didn't have any reason to include or at least explicate in the story itself, so maybe that'll have to come up another time.

I got a Nero Wolfe story for Yuletide this year, a Saul/Nero with a fitting hint of Saul/Archie!

Frozen Pipes and An Unassuming Smile (3319 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Saul Panzer/Nero Wolfe
Characters: Nero Wolfe, Saul Panzer, Archie Goodwin, Fritz Brenner
Additional Tags: little sprinkle of Archie/Saul just because. i mean have we read the books
Summary: His Christmas plans ruined by an iced-over interstate, Archie comes home unexpectedly to find someone else in his chair. Now he has to figure out why Saul Panzer's in the brownstone and why Wolfe is being so damnably cagey about it before—Well, actually, he doesn't have to figure it out at all. But he's bored and he's curious, so...

The dynamic between Saul Panzer and Nero Wolfe in the books is extremely enjoyable, though of course never center stage. They have a lot in common and are personal friends, and Saul pops up in some very intimate places, including one book where Wolfe reveals that Saul is asleep up in Wolfe's own room (!) after an exhausting patch of casework.

So my signup included interest in Saul/Wolfe (as well as Saul/Archie and Archie/Wolfe), and my author ended up writing the first entry in the Saul/Wolfe tag! One of its delights is that it also gives us a good characterization of Archie, as he tries to solve this mystery propelled by his own affronted sense of territoriality re: Wolfe. It's a very cozy brownstone story, with delicious meals, and Fritz of course knowing everything. :D

Happy New Year!

I wrote two stories for Yuletide this year: my assignment, and one treat.

The assignment was for what's probably my very favorite Mary Renault novel, "The Mask of Apollo", about an Athenian actor in the 4th century BC. He gets caught up in the events surrounding Dion of Syracuse and his attempt to liberate Sicily, but that's not the point, really. The things I thrive on in this book are the characters, the emotions, and how it's all so well grounded in the life of a working actor.

The story is set after the events of the novel but before the years-later epilogue, and is about Niko's recovery from the real-life tragedy he's just lived through, via his work on a new play, his realizations about his craft, and of course his (canon) beloved Thettalos, who's on his way to becoming the towering figure in the field that he is in real-life history.

I found it such a pleasure to write, even though I had never written fic in first-person before (the novel is first-person past-tense as well)...I had always wanted to tackle something about Niko facing the emotional aftermath plus his own middle-age all at once, and about him finding his way out (not solo by his bootstraps, but within his whole context of life and work and art and love and whatnot). But I hadn't yet been able to really think my way into it, until now. This assignment was perfect timing, and as Niko found answers for himself, I felt comforted too.

I made up almost all of the plays mentioned in the story, though the playwrights are real. I think it's possible to read the story without having read the novel, in the sense that most of the important context is embedded in it, but of course I'm so familiar with the book that it can be hard to tell...

The treat was for my eternal love "The Sting" (1973). [personal profile] simplecoffee had some really fun prompts, so I couldn't help myself... h/c with hurt Johnny? Trains?? YES PLEASE! She also mentioned Outsider POV, so I gave that a whirl as well, and ended up really enjoying the OCs whose lives are briefly visited by these two pining blue-eyed grifters. As prep, I read a couple of books by real-life Depression-era hobos, a man ("Beggars of Life: a Hobo Autobiography") and a woman ("Sister of The Road: The Autobiography of Boxcar Bertha").

As with the first-person POV for Mask of Apollo, I realized I had never written Outsider POV before, so this year was a year of learning and stretching for me for sure...

Happy Yuletide to all! I got two stories this year, both for the super-slashy, very beautiful 2001 movie "Spy Game", which is chock-full of intense emotions and extreme competence. I always think that anyone who enjoys a heist or con movie will also enjoy this one, since Robert Redford spends the entire non-flashback core of the film being interrogated and supposedly backed into a corner, while actually he is setting a whole plan of his own deftly in motion. ♥

The main gift lightly dips in to Nathan & Tom's life together over time in the job, as Nathan thinks he's controlling Tom, while unbeknownst to him, Tom is figuring him out. I really enjoyed the use of those "four lies" from canon:

Can't believe I haven't posted at all since [personal profile] msmoat died. I'm still missing her a lot, and I wish her DW hadn't been deleted. I don't know whose decision that was. Sigh.

One big part of my radio silence lately is that I've developed a stubborn case of tendonitis in my dominant arm (the thumb/wrist kind), which has been a real problem. Not just because my work involves a lot of varied use of my hands even outside of typing, but also because my main hobby and so much of my interaction with friends are via the computer.

I wrote a little story for [personal profile] amedia's [community profile] guardian_wishlist, for instance, but haven't answered any of its comments just yet. Or, like, it's Yuletide season, and putting together my letter and signups is slow and ouchy.

But I'm out here! Just having some hard times, is all.

Summary:

How long since the bubbles had died? It felt too long, a deadly eternity. But Stephen couldn't count, and didn't: he simply rolled himself over the edge of the gaping hatchway and fell.

It was like an early present just for me, to get to write Jack/Stephen hurt/comfort slash feelings realization etcetera, with a focus on protectiveness, guilt, and who gets to sacrifice himself for whom (Jack: "Me, duh" Stephen: ">:["). I mentioned to some friends that, as happens so often in the hurt/comfort I write, especially for these guys, the physical injury is really the least of anybody's problems. ♥

I'm grateful to [personal profile] marycrawford for her cheerleading and beta help, and to [personal profile] the_shoshanna and [personal profile] msmoat for discussions and cheering-on! The whole process was such a pleasure, even when I was having my typical late-story "OPE, DIDN'T THINK THROUGH HOW THIS BIT IS ACTUALLY SPOSED TO HAPPEN" feelings.

Oh man. I got FIVE YULETIDE STORIES this year, and they are all so wonderful and so lovingly tailored to me, I am overflowing with gratitude and joy. Which I first typed "overglowing", which I am ALSO doing. I recommend these stories!!

Two are for the Japanese BL "Old Fashion Cupcake", about a pair of salarymen who fall in love over desserts. Two are for "The Sting", about a pair of Depression-era grifters. And one is for the "Lord Peter Wimsey" mystery novels from the golden age (1920s-30s), focusing here on Peter's manservant Bunter as well as Peter himself.

First, the Old Fashion Cupcake stories--one of them is my official present, though I admit I wasn't a hundred percent sure which one. I think it's the first of these two:
Old Fashion Cupcake stories: 'Next to You' and 'Old Fashion Road Trip' )

Then there are two "The Sting" stories, coming from really interesting different angles:
The Sting stories: 'Timing and Lighting' and 'the last train to wherever you need to be' )

And then the Lord Peter Wimsey story!
Peter and Bunter: 'Lord of Misrule' )

I am awash in riches, and I deeply appreciate and savor every single one of them. ♥ !!!

The two stories in the main collection:

Five Times Meng Shao Fei and Tang Yi’s Life Was a Fanfic Cliché and One Time It Wasn’t (3007 words) by Anonymous

Fandom: HIStory3 - 圈套 | HIStory3: Trapped (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: Meng Shaofei/Tang Yi, Jack | Fang Liangdian/Zhao Li'an | Zhao-zi
Summary: Tang Yi has never read fanfic, but his life bears a remarkable resemblance sometimes. It’s probably Meng Shao Fei’s fault, but here we are.

As I mentioned in my comment, after starting their relationship inside an Enemies-to-Lovers tale, of COURSE Tang Yi and Meng Shao Fei would end up inside five other classic tropes. :D This story gives snapshots of fake-dating (fake-real-fake-dating?), h/c wound-tending, One Bed, and more, and Tang Yi and Meng Shao Fei behave accordingly. I especially like the Tang Yi POV voice, it has a very nicely complex mixture of his many aspects, from competence to deep vulnerability to perfectionism to anger, all topped with sheer heart-eyes adoration of Shao Fei. ♥

Additional Tags: Smoking
Summary: 8th October 1935 and it's the wedding of the year - Lord Peter Wimsey and Miss Harriet Vane have finally tied the knot. But the wedding breakfast (served at the Dowager Duchess' London house) is getting a little heated. So the balcony is an excellent place to which to escape.

I had really been feeling a wish to be able to spend more time with minor Wimsey-canon characters Eiluned Price and Sylvia Marriott this year, the butch/femme-ish domestic couple who are Harriet's deeply protective friends. Here I got a very nice little moment out of time, during the (offscreen) festivities after Peter and Harriet's wedding, with Eiluned running into, of all people, Peter's scapegrace nephew Jerry. Two characters with very different approaches to life, and yet, given Jerry's canon weakness for strong older women, I should have seen it coming. :D

Summary: Five times Henry and Johnny shared a bed, for good reasons, bad reasons, and then, at last, the best reason.

SIGH, so many of the tropes I absolutely love, knitted into a blanket of FEELINGS and wrapped around characters I adore. It's an Only One Bed + Five Things, and the bed is not the same bed, but the ongoing throughline is, winding Henry and Johnny tighter and tighter. I love this Pining Henry so much, and it's an extra joy to be able to see, through Henry's eyes clouded with longing and fear, little hints of Johnny figuring things out and coming up with his own return tactics. Also, seeing Johnny through Henry's loving eyes is sizzlin hot. :D

Summary:

Stephen took hold of Jack's face again, but not this time to cherish. He held him still—Jack making a mild complaining sound—and moved back far enough for the lantern-light to fall upon Jack and bring him into focus. There—there, on his jaw, where Stephen's hands had grabbed him—a faint smudge of the silvery dust. And on the side of his neck where the shirt lay loose, another trace of it, glittering like assassins' knives; Stephen remembered how he had combed all of his treacherous fingers through Jack's hair, stealthily savouring him. Contaminating him.

I am so grateful for getting this assignment, this particular year...recent setbacks really had knocked me flat, with all kinds of trouble concentrating or even sometimes getting out of bed. And besides the reassurance and comfort of being able to write for someone who shares my love for these guys, I also think having the chance to spend time with Jack and Stephen was good for me.

I am always remarking how in the Aubrey/Maturin canon, music scenes are love scenes. Here I really got to double down on that. ♥

Characters: Marcus Keane, Tomas Ortega, Mouse (The Exorcist), Devon Bennett
Additional Tags: Future Fic, Canon-Typical Violence, Post-Season/Series 02, Developing Relationship
Summary:

There are buzzards circling above the barn, at least twenty of them, huge wingspans with sharp, dark feathers, carrion-eaters. There is smoke on the air, and when Marcus stumbles out of his stolen truck, he sees why — the far side of the barn is half scorched, blackened siding pushed out of the ground like crooked teeth, specks of ash floating on the breeze, sticking to Marcus’s skin and clothing. Inside, someone is laughing.

Tomas is laughing.

My main gift is so tonally appropriate to the show, so well-characterized, with a controlled sensitivity--and, it resolves the finale's two cliffhangers re: Marcus and Bennett! I particularly love the tiny detail that it mentions as an argument for why Bennett is actually rescuable whereas others in his position were not--it makes good sense and I could imagine it being part of the show's worldbuilding as well. I really felt for Bennett here; and I loooooved Mouse in this, so steely and strong but also a team player. And the Marcus POV, especially toward Tomas, is deep and intense and full of feeling. ♥

One of the treats is also Exorcist (TV), and it's a great complement with the other! This one is more zoomed-in on Marcus and Tomas, passionate with all kinds of emotion (including ones like worry), with a Marcus POV so naturally rooted in self-sacrifice that he hardly even notices it. But because it's set between seasons 1 and 2, it can feed in these little issues that we know are going to come home to roost later, and it makes me clutch my heart in such good ways.

An opportunity for a big trade forces Gunnar to face the feelings he's been hiding since his run-in with the Kaimar.

Sinbad has been waiting for just such an opportunity.

------
I think it can be read and enjoyed whether you know the show or not, even though it references a canon episode. What happened is, quiet northman Gunnar used to be a member of a violent Viking shock-troop, before he lost everything and exiled himself, ending up with Sinbad and the others on their little wandering ship. And there's an episode in which a secret society of Justice-Mercenaries find him and are about to execute him for his crimes, and he's like "legit, go ahead". Because of who Gunnar is now (remorseful & willing to die to atone, and also putting everything on the line to protect and save Sinbad), the justice-mercenaries absolve him, and invite him to join them in their justice-mercenary ways. But he doesn't, because he wants to stay with Sinbad. ♥

So in this story, Gunnar is digesting the implications of this--with all his guilt and remorse, how could he have turned down an actual opportunity to make amends for his bad deeds??? (Of course, weeeee know. And Sinbad knows, and he lets Gunnar know. :D :D :D )

Hello, Writer, and thanks for being here! I appreciate your love for these little fandoms and characters I adore. ♥

If you already have something in mind you think I'll like, please go ahead and write it. If you have fun with it, I will too. Fly, be free!

But if you'd find details helpful, here are some thoughts:

Some of my general preferences: )

Here are my signups, in alphabetical order: The Exorcist (TV), Shetland, Sinbad (TV), The Sting (1973).

The Yuletide nomination period really snuck up on me this year--I basically have until tomorrow night!

Of course the noms aren't visible, but from the coordination spreadsheet, it looks like no one there has yet nominated Sinbad (TV), so I'll be doing that. No sign of The Exorcist (TV) either, though of course you never know if someone has nominated it but not shared it on the spreadsheet.

I can only nominate 3 fandoms, so I'll be mulling over that third slot. Possibly "Master and Commander", since there is no sign of either that or the Aubrey/Maturin novels on the spreadsheet, and I don't like to risk Jack and Stephen not being in the tagset.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone has nominated "HIStory3:Trapped" and "Where Your Eyes Linger", which I have watched and loved but not yet mentioned here. Not sure if I feel up to offering to write them, but you never know!

I know it's been almost a week since official reveals, but I've been solidly down with a doozy of a cold. At last, I can concentrate and read and even think! Yay.

I wrote one assignment and one treat for Yuletide this year:

North of Everywhere (8316 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Shetland (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Duncan Hunter/Jimmy Perez
Characters: Duncan Hunter, Jimmy Perez
Additional Tags: Cooking, Pining, Post-Season/Series 05, Everyone Thinks They're Together, Feelings Realization, Getting Together, First Time
Summary:

There was a part of Jimmy—still too strong a part, the one who lived alone, stood alone, drew the firm line round himself—that kept wanting to say, Thanks but you didn't have to do that. Thanks but you're already welcome to stay. Thanks but I'm used to shifting for myself.

Thanks, but.

He shook it off as best he could. And instead, he walked behind Duncan as they both left the kitchen, and put his hands on Duncan's shoulders.

I love the crime show Shetland, which just ended its 5th season (and with a lovely present for the Jimmy/Duncan shippers)--it's beautiful, atmospheric, well-cast and acted, interesting dynamics among the characters. And I especially love the relationship between Jimmy Perez, the lead, a widower with one daughter, and Duncan Hunter, the ex-husband of Jimmy's late wife as well as the biological father of Jimmy's daughter. They're different in such interesting ways, but they work so hard at their co-parenting, and as Cassie grows up and leaves home, their de facto marriage still remains.

I had never tried writing Shetland before, but at last I felt brave enough to offer it, and I had a great time! I wanted something gradual and cozy, and I wanted Jimmy not to realize just quite how married he is (and how married he wants to be) until he's neck-deep in it.

I also wrote a treat:

The Breath at Your Shoulder (2705 words) by Dorinda
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Sting (1973)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Henry Gondorff/Johnny Hooker
Characters: Henry Gondorff, Johnny Hooker, Alva Coleman
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Con Artists, 1930s, Dreams and Nightmares, Survivor Guilt, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Family, Found Family
Summary:

By the time he finally felt he might be sleepy, it was the truly wee hours. And over the quiet breathing of a dozen other people, he recognized Hooker's voice at once.

Too soft to be a shout, too thin and high to be a groan. It was as if Hooker was on a train heading the other way, and this quiet keening noise was all Henry had left as he faded into the distance.

I am no great shakes at coming up with prompts when I sign up for challenges, but I greatly admire those who are. And I found myself struck by [personal profile] nahnahnahnah 's prompt for The Sting (1973), reminding me that Johnny was so close to Luther's family. I had never considered the likelihood of his survivor's guilt before, and I enjoyed getting to do that.
