Anyone who's interested in this year's Vividcon, the engines are rumbling to life, so I thought I'd point out the next couple of deadlines FYI:

1. Voting for this year's Challenge Vid Theme closes tonight, Friday 3/18, at 11:59pm EDT!

2. Also, we're recruiting volunteer vidders for this year's Vividcon Vidder Auction. All the details are here, and interested vidders should send me an email at dorinda [at] thechicagoloop [dot] net by this Sunday, 3/20!

I belong to a Nero Wolfe community on Dreamwidth called [community profile] milk_and_orchids. And we were having a discussion of all the books in order, which paused a couple years ago. [personal profile] aris_tgd suggests we start it up again, and I am all for it!

So I thought I'd mention the comm here, in case it piques anyone's interest. You don't have to be any kind of a Wolfe expert or anything, and all kinds of input is welcome, including discussion of the A&E series with Tim Hutton or other adaptations. It's a good idea to be slash friendly, though slashing isn't mandatory.

And give a look-see through past posts! The tone of the group is very much into the characterizational and interpersonal, so I love to see various dialogue and narrative exchanges that get quoted back in people's book reviews and discussions. It also helps remind me, like, which book is it where Archie cherishes the leather billfold Wolfe gave him, which book is it where Archie cherishes the kidskin case Wolfe gave him, which book is it where Archie cherishes the dressing gown Wolfe gave him... :D

As a followup to the idyll discussion of the other day, may I boost the announcement of [personal profile] arduinna's Idyll Challenge! Open challenge, for fic, vids, art, etc. Here's her post, where you can actually see the molecules aligning as she talks herself into it. \o/

I also like her two-tracked chart, with the Cave->Shack line parallel to, but with its start point set slightly further back from, the Desert Island->Idyll line. ARDUINNA IT IS ALMOST LIKE SCIENCE.

I also also seriously wish that the Pros story "In Hot Water: an Idyl" was available somewhere online, instead of (as far as I can tell) just on the Pros story-CD set. Does anyone know, are there any flexibilities for sharing any of those CD stories, like private email circulation?

Only a couple more days left to sign up for TroublesFest 2013, a Haven fic exchange!

Here's the exchange FAQ on AO3.

I have not signed up yet, on account of I have a lot of decisionmaking problems. But soon!

Anyone else out there going to Con.txt? Remember that it's time to vote for panels! They're going to do a preliminary response count this weekend, so the sooner the better.

I've volunteered to co-mod a couple (slashing Justified, and Age Disparities In Slash Pairings), but there are also a lot of other topics available for your voting pleasure.

Hope to see you there!

So, ten years ago (?)(!) I was involved in the original 101 Ways to End Up in a Canadian Shack challenge (Fanlore article. My shacks then were I Spy and Hornblower (TV).

Now, for an anniversary celebration, [personal profile] cesperanza has opened up a new collection, Canadian Shack 2011! Writers from the original challenge have put up some shacks to start, but now it's open to everyone, until we get to 101.

So, if you feel like throwing your favorite characters into (or in the vicinity of) a Canadian (or the vicinity of *g*) Shack, come and play! As Cesperanza says in the anniversary celebration link above, "Write a short (around 500 words-ish) story putting your fandom/characters/pairing of choice into a Canadian shack!" I would add: your fannish universe has no "Canada" as such? Doesn't even matter! And repetition of fandoms is totally fine!

My shacks for the anniversary challenge are, alphabetically by fandom: I Spy (the more things change...), Persuaders, Rubicon, and Trapeze. Details:

Thanks to a post over on the LJ Invisible-Man comm [livejournal.com profile] hot_donuts, I've been informed that The Invisible Man season 1 set is selling at Amazon US for (as of today) USD$7.50, and Amazon Canada for CDN$11.99. All the eps from season 1, the first ep from season 2, plus some commentary and an interview. What a deal!

I highly recommend this series. It has drama, humor, teamwork, action-adventure, science fiction, van chases, bowling shirts, gunplay, Viewmasters, a resourceful Swiss bad guy, and a(n eventual) buddy-pair who just LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH YOU GUYS IDEK.

I-Man (Fanlore page with description and many helpful links) has inspired such vids as:

* Kryptonite: go to this page and search for Kryptonite; while you're there, check out Speed Racer, too. They're presently at the bottom of the page.)

* All the Way: a festivid from this year. Festivid post here, with a link to greensilver's own post.

* Weeping Willow: LJ post here.

* Voodoo: downloadable .zip here--I can't presently find a streaming version.

...and more! Just from that sample, and not even getting into the other fanworks like fiction, I think you can see some of the breadth of interpretation I-Man allows. You got your lighthearted actiony BobbyHobbes in Speed Racer. You got your Devoted Partners in Kryptonite. You got your Bobby And Darien Get Married in All the Way. You got your Intennnnse Angst in Weeping Willow. You got your Erotic Wrath between Darien and Arnaud in Voodoo. Et cetera!

In short: maybe you want an inexpensive slashy stocking stuffer. And if so, here's one!

I'm very sorry to say that Sandy has died.

I'm thinking of her, and of everyone else who loved her, knew her, was affected by her, heard of her, was touched by one of the many many ripples she sent out into the world.

As cesperanza says, If there's something cool in fandom, Sandy's usually somewhere around the bottom of it: the Virgule mailing list? the Escapade (and later VVC) vid review? the University of Iowa Fan Culture Preservation Project? the Slashfic Hall of shame?

movies_michelle has an update on Sandy Herrold. If you've met her, or seen her vids (Media Cannibals and Clucking Belles), or talked with her about stories, or seen her panels, or read her fiction, or listened to her critiques, or heard her laugh--or anything at all--and you wanted to tell her, now is the time.

talking_sock is going out tomorrow, and has a post here, if you'd like to send a message for her to print out and take with her, or contribute to flowers.

We love you so much, Sandy, and we couldn't ever forget you, ever, so you can cross that idea off RIGHT NOW.

Re: my earlier post, X has been re-uploading some additional art today. So, to the fandom list, let me add: Invisible Man, Firefly, Millennium/Constantine crossover, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Heroes, Horatio Hornblower, Prison Break, and Lost.

ETA: And Wiseguy!

Share and enjoy!

Wonderful fannish artist X, who has, as [personal profile] klia reminds me, done some helpful fundraising for others in the past, now needs a little fundraising for herself. She's offering any of her art pieces (except one) on T-shirts, and also has designed some more subtle fannish icons if you prefer (or if you would spend so much time staring at the gorgeous picture on your own shirt that you'd trip and fall down).

Details are on the update page of her site, and links to browse the art are at the top.

Fandoms include: Fast & the Furious, Harry Potter, Highlander, Iron Man, Jericho, Lord of the Rings, Magnificent 7 (TV), Master & Commander, Star Wars (Han/Luke or Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan), Stargate: SG1; and in the site's "Other" category: Andromeda, Band of Brothers, Dead Zone (TV), Miracles, Now and Again, Psych, Smallville, Standoff/Life crossover, and X-Files.

There's also a Sherlock Holmes (2009) piece among the sample T-shirt mockups--and she has a White Collar in the works. Plus, the initials in the fannish icons can be customized for other fandoms the design might suit (for instance, she mentions that the Angel icon could easily be customized for Supernatural instead).

Some of her pieces need to be re-uploaded, and she's on it, but it'll take time--if there's something that doesn't show up for you, try again later, and if you have any questions, drop her a line at the email address on her site!

ETA: additional fandoms that have now been re-uploaded: Invisible Man, Firefly, Millennium/Constantine crossover, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Heroes, Horatio Hornblower, Prison Break, and Lost.

(And please pass this along, if you know folks who'd be interested!)
Apologies to those who have seen this already, or who have seen quite enough of Yuletide for one year...

The existing mailing list for Yuletide pinch-hitting is down. There is a new list you can join; instructions are at http://community.livejournal.com/yuletide_admin/93929.html.
