A weekend of rest and recuperation

Whew. Finally, a holiday weekend to myself! I just finished a very enervating real-life task, and am exhausted--also, I've unfortunately been sick with a very peculiar and tenacious throat virus for, what, over two weeks now? UGH. Never had anything quite like it. I went to urgent care eventually, and they said the quick-culture strep test was negative, but if it's still not gone after this long weekend of total rest, I'm going back to ask for a proper throat culture. Because this is RIDICULOUS. (I am feeling better overall than I was, though, which is promising. It's just taking so long!)

I've been posting a bit in the discussion of In the Best Families, the Nero Wolfe version of Sherlock Holmes's "Final Problem"/"Empty House". Super-spoilery discussion over there, needless to say! And I have yet more comments to make. Ah, I do love that book. Poor Archie gets put through the wringer, not to mention Wolfe, and we know how much I love to see that happen to my beloveds. O:-)

Speaking of wringers: *I* was put through a wringer by the Hannibal finale. More than a week ago now, and I am still all a-flail. SO INTENSE. SO BEAUTIFUL. SO AMAZING. Apologies if it's not to your taste but you read my tumblr, because among the kitties and birdies and doggies and stuff, there are an awful lot of heated panting bloody embraces lately. The girl can't help it! ♥ ___________ ♥

I've been getting the feeling that it might be time for another Master and Commander rewatch. I almost did last night, but then it was time for meds-and-beds. I try not to watch it all the time, so it won't get worn out in my head, but I just love it, and Jack and Stephen, and them being so married, soooo muuuuuch. A rewatch at this juncture would be medicinal!

Yes, those M&C posts made me want rewatch. Oh, Mowett and his poetry. And Howard and his creepy obsession with guns and killing everything he possibly can.

It totally cracked me up, how many of the deleted M&C scenes are basically "Howard runs around killing things with very careless attention to firearm safety". And poor Stephen constantly giving him the stinkeye--like, could you maybe try NOT KILLING EVERYTHING for five minutes kthx? O the foreshadowing!

Thanks! I'm glad to generally be feeling better, constitution-wise. But I'll be happy when the actual throat-soreness is behind me, because bleargh, tedious.

On the bright side, I have alllll the excuses for eating the frozen fruit-and-veg-juice popsicles in the freezer. MEDICINAL.

Another of the things I'm going to do--soon--get back to reading those Nero Wolfe books. I was thoroughly enjoying them, thanks to you, but stopped reading somewhere in the forties. Must get back.

Oh! Master and Commander! I'd love to do a rewatch of that myself. It's been long enough that I don't remember much. But then I'd have to re-read the books. And then I wouldn't get to the NW books. WHY ARE THERE NOT MORE HOURS IN THE DAY???

The great thing about the Nero Wolfe books is that they'll always be there when you need them. They're not going anywhere. So no rush! And depending on your feelings about spoilers, it can be fun to look at the discussions on milk-and-orchids anyway...we tend to bring out and unpack some of the choicest bits, especially emotional reads from between the lines. ou know the sort of thing I like.

Hee! I suspect you have. The finale kind of blew everybody's mind. And even out of context, I think it's a gorgeous scene! Though if you ever need any backstory or explanations, just let me know. The show is really tightly woven and ended up so full of foreshadowing. Whew!

There has been so much fannish flailing over the finale of Hannibal that I guess it's going to have to go higher on my priority list. Luckily, nightmarethrenody is interested in starting to watch it, so I don't have to get half an episode in and stop because he wants to watch it "someday" with me. ;-)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to a complete rewatch; a hell of a lot of threads paid off in the end, really remarkable. Not to mention gorgeous. I mean, it's not everybody's type of show? But it sure is mine.

I hope the throat crud goes the hell away! You don't need that jamming your game. Also a Master and Commander rewatch is an excellent idea. I haven't watched in a long time because I knew it so well and didn't want to wear it out. But I've been revisting old loves recently (i.e., Stargate SG-1) and so happy at how good they are and how much I still enjoy them.

And yeah, sometimes when I get to know something so well, like I can recite all the dialogue, I know I have to simmer down and take time off so I don't overdo and make it somehow impossible to actually re-experience. But I think I've been away from M&C long enough by now that a fresh rewatch will do me good. And I watched a clip or two online, and they whetted my appetite something fierce! Oh, Jack and Stephen arguing over the ethics of corporal punishment, and grappling so hard with their beliefs and also their feelings for each other, sigh. ♥

I am SO SO SORRY I gave you my mutant throat ick. I'm still getting over it myself, though I think for me it also activated a bit of reflux that added to the soreness. I didn't even go in to test for strep, stupid me, so I'm glad your test came back negative. And I hope you beat it soon.

Looking forward to some free time to stream Hannibal directly into my brain. It's been all unpacking, all the time here....

Oh noooooooo that's terrible that you have it too. D: But you know, I suspect that I gave it to you! Remember, at Connexions I felt my sinuses kicking up, and thought it was allergies or something? The throat pain didn't come on until well after the con, granted, but I'm wondering if whatever was incubating in my sinuses ended up appearing in the throat once it was good and ready.

In any case, UGH, and my fervent apologies! I hope you're feeling better posthaste--poor thing, having to move and all, that sucks.

And re: Hannibal, the day someone invents a USB input that plugs into the brain, the better off we'll all be. \o/

Ugh, I'm so sorry you're sick, but yay holiday weekend (I myself am laboring on Labor Day).

So I'll be in DC again on October 7--same thing as last time, there on Wed and Thur, leaving for NY on Fri, coming back Sunday, and then home on Tuesday evening. If you think you'll be around, I'd love to take you to dinner again one of those nights, or maybe meet up for drinks or something.
